Blog Name Change Coming Soon...

Carmen's Mommy Blog is going to be undergoing some major renovations within the next month, along with a new dot com. I already bought the domain name but just wanted to warn people. I'll probably change the name within the next week. If you've taken the time to kindly save me to your favorites you won't find me if you're not warned, although I could reroute it I suppose.

Never mind! Ha. You'll find me. You'll have to add my new web address to your favorites once I make the switch. I thought about switching the entire platform of my blog like I did with my beauty blog but decided not to. I'll just make some changes; well, a lot of changes!

The new name of my dot com and my blog will be www.carmensadventuresinparenting.com. I already bought the domain name but just wanted to warn people.

Carmen's Random Tips: Why does my air conditioner sound like it has water in it?

My Air Conditioner Sounds Like It Has Water in It - Why?

If your air conditioner sounds like it has water in it, then this can mean one of a few things.  There is a simple solution to this problem and if it doesn't help, then there might be something more serious going on.

The reason that I'm posting about this is because I had this happen recently and I've had it happen in the past.  I have a brother that is a master certified heating and cooling tech with his own business, so I learned long ago what to do for this problem.

Has it rained recently?  Maybe some rain got into your unit.  Have you tilted your unit?  Tilting your air conditioning unit might also help.  If your air conditioner is making a water gurgling noise, then try turning it from "cool" to "fan" for a while and see if that makes a difference.  This is what helps me when we get a lot of rain or if it's just making that gurgling noise due to water/moisture building up that can't drip out because it's not tilted.

I'm not able to tilt mine right now either, so as soon as I start hearing the gurgling noise, I put it on "fan" for about an hour or so until the water dries up.  I have to do this a couple of times to get my a/c running smooth again.  Give it a try and if that doesn't help then you may have to have your air conditioner serviced or repaired, or you might have to buy a brand new one altogether.

Carmen's Random Tips: How to Avoid Work at Home Scams and Make Your Work at Home Dream a Reality

Tips to Make Your Work at Home Dream a Reality

So you want to work from home, but you don’t even know where to begin looking into legitimate ways to make this happen. Well, guess what?

There are a ton of legitimate ways to earn money from home to support your family. You just have to know how to avoid the scams and you also need to know where to find the right resources that will aide you in your search efforts.

How to Avoid Scams

The number one way to avoid a scam is to know that you do not ever pay to do work for anyone! With that said, however, if you choose to join an MLM business opportunity there is an investment. Why is there an investment? Because you’re starting your own business and starting your own business doesn’t come free. You should also know that some employers (some…not all) require that you pay for your own background check if a background check is a requirement to employment.

What are some things that you don’t pay for? You do not ever pay to work for anyone as a data entry operator. You do not pay anyone to do any work, whatsoever, other than starting your own business and the example stated above as far as background checks go. But other than that…never pay anyone to work for them. Run from those types of opportunities.

Carefully Research an Opportunity

Before deciding to join anything or to work for anyone carefully research the company and also research whether or not it’s the right fit for you personally. The money might seem appealing, but is this something you actually enjoy and are good at? If it’s not, then you will not be successful in the long run, hence wasting your time.

I don’t know about you, but wasting my time is a huge pet peeve of mine (it's actually number two on my list of pet peeves!). However, you may give something a try if you think it might be a good fit and if it doesn’t work out, well then, at least you know that you tried and gave it your best efforts.

How to Find these Jobs

When doing a work at home job search I personally always head on over to my four favorite hot spots that I mentioned here. Two very popular work at home forums, along with two popular work at home blogs. Because those are the places to look to avoid scams, to find the legitimate job opportunities, to see if anyone else has heard of a company that you’re considering, and just to connect with other moms (and sometimes dads) in the same boat as yourself.

You can learn a lot with all four of those resources - I did. I found all four of these resources over the past five years doing my own research. And I’m glad that I did, because it’s enabled me to make my dream of becoming a wahm come true! I hope that these tips and resources enable you to make your dream come true too!!

Carmen's Random Tips: Work at Home Tips for Moms that Want to Become Wahms

Everything You Need to Know About Working from Home

I think that it’s just about every mother’s dream to work from home, enabling them to both help support their family and to be with their children without the need for childcare.

Most parents dread the very thought of putting their child, or children, in daycare for many reasons. But what if I told you that there are actually countless ways that you can make that dream become a reality?

Many women from all over the world have found the secrets to making this happen and so can you.  There are at home jobs and career opportunities out there for every educational and skill level. Whether you have a college degree or a GED…you have options.

So, here are my work at home tips based on my own personal experience and research over the past five years.

Work at Home Tips

First Things First - Assess Your Skills

To work from home you really do need to have basic computer skills such as typing, the ability to web browse, and maybe even some basic Microsoft Word.  These are actually things that you can learn in a small vocational class or that you can teach yourself!

  • Typing:  When finding jobs that involve any typing, whether it's a data entry type job, transcription, or even writing, being a quick and accurate typist will help you to get hired. It will also help you to work more smoothly and quickly.  The faster you work, the more work you can fit into one hour. But, remember when typing that accuracy is also just as important as speed.
  • Grammar and Spelling:  These skills are extremely important with any online work, but especially with writing and transcription.  Before even attempting to apply for any jobs like this make sure that you have mastered your grammar and spelling, and/or know how to utilize a quick spell check tool to double check that you’ve used proper grammar and spelling! Those tools can be very helpful. You will not get hired in the world of writing and transcription if you have poor grammar and spelling.
  • Customer Service Skills:  There are tons of customer service jobs all over the internet! You just have to know the right places to find them and I’m going to give you the inside scoop on where to go to find these jobs.  Some companies are willing to train and work with beginners, while others require some customer service experience history. So if you have worked in any type of customer service, then this is something that you may want to consider. You will also be happy to know that there are many at home customer service jobs that do not require phone skills. These types of jobs offer web based chat customer service instead of telephone customer service.
  • Telephone Skills:  Yes, this is actually considered a skill.  Some people are phone shy, while others are naturals on the telephone. This is a skill that comes in handy for both customer service and virtual assistant type jobs.
  • Administrative Skills:  If you’ve ever done any office type work or worked as an administrative assistant, then it will be a piece of cake for you to land a job as a Virtual Assistant.
  • Research Skills:  If you’re interested in working as a Web Search Evaluator, or as a Freelance Writer, you’ll need excellent research skills. This can be something that is a passion of yours and that just comes naturally to you. Do you like to look up random things and learn about different topics or world affairs? Then you might be a researcher at heart.
  • Listening Skills:  Having the ability to listen is important in the world of both customer service and transcription, but especially with transcription because you have to dictate the words that you hear. The money that you can work your way up to in the transcription world can be desirable, but if you get frustrated with dictating audio, then this isn’t for you. With that said, this is a skill that you can hone. It may be frustrating at first, but it can become second nature with some practice and hard work before you know it. It all depends on you and your personal desire to make it work as with anything that you pursue in life.
  • Web Browsing Skills:  There is a difference between web browsing and being a “master web browser.” How quickly can you type, find and research a topic? If you can find what you’re looking for in either seconds or minutes, then you’re a master. If it takes you long and you’re lost, then you need to hone this skill, or this just isn’t right for you.

Now we’re going to do a quick rundown on what’s available based on college level.  I think that some people feel intimidated without a degree, but you can actually make a really decent amount of money working from home without a degree. That’s not to say that having a degree is not important, because that’s not what I’m saying at all. I’m just saying that it is possible to make good money without one.

With a College Degree:  Animators; Web Developers; Accountants; Freelance Technical Writers; 3-D Artists; Psychiatrists; Doctors; Writing; Web Search Evaluator; Translators and more.

Without a College Degree:  Freelance Writing; Customer Service; Data Entry (there’s only a few that are legitimate, but they exist); Virtual Assistants; Surveys; Web Search Evaluator (these positions sometimes consider people without degrees, depending on your resume); Blogging; Affiliate Marketing; General Transcription; Medical Transcription (this requires training and certification); MLM home businesses; and more!

To Get Hired

If you want to get hired anywhere, you need to have the skills and a wonderful resume. Your resume and cover letter can either make you or break you, so you will also want to master these things. You should have a different cover letter for different job types that you are applying for. For example, one cover letter for writing and one cover letter for transcription.

For Support and Job Search

Four favorite hot spots around the web for other moms that work from home are wahm.com, workplacelikehome.com, realwaystoearnmoneyonline.com and wahadventures.com. All four sites offer massive amounts of information and work at home tips to help aide you in becoming successful at working from home, while also allowing you to meet other wahms that have been there and done that or are still trying to find their way. It’s nice to have more than one place to go. Many people refer to all four of these sites for help.

The forums on wahm.com and workplacelikehome.com are full of other moms that work from home that can help you in your job search efforts.  If you’re interested in working as a Web Search Evaluator, you can find information on that in the “Google Rater” folder on wahm.com’s forum. Other non-phone jobs can be found in their Telecommuting Folder.

You can easily search their forum folders by picking a key word and this is encouraged by forum moderators and members. For example, search for “at home customer service chat jobs” and then going through the results to find jobs. Needler.com does home web based chat and Fancy Hands (fancyhands.com) is a great place to check into for virtual assistant work. You can find some non-phone jobs in their listings.

At workplacelikehome.com you’ll have to join in order to see their forum folders, but there you will find many at home customer service jobs. Most moms are looking for non-phone work due to little ones. In that case, your best bet is freelance writing, blogging, affiliate marketing, non-phone customer service, non-phone virtual assisting (hard to come by) and transcription.

Final Notes

Another important tip to take into consideration is that many wahms juggle more than one at home job. That way you’re always guaranteed enough work flow. I hope that these valuable tips that I’ve shared help you become successful with your desire to join millions of wahms around the world! Best of luck in your job search!

Making Some Changes - Me and My OCD

I just got done cleaning up my blog a little and plan on doing some more with it at some point. I added a Holiday Photos section and then realized when looking back that I never posted a Happy Easter photo on Easter, so my OCD kicked in and I just had to add one and then back dated it, muahaha!

So if you're subscribed and received a Happy Easter notification, rest assured I'm not being a weirdo. I know it's not Easter, lol. Well, I guess my OCD making me do that makes me a bit weird, but I didn't want to leave a holiday out of my collection, hahaha! I kills me... So funny you forgot to laugh I know. Okay, stuff to do...

My Recent Adventures with My Lawn

Adventures in Lawn Mowing...

photo credit: Sheila Steele via photopin cc
Okay...so this is going to be an interesting post. I feel like sharing my lawn care experience just because it was the first time I've ever used any type of lawn mower, or weed whacker, and I did it, so I'm proud!

This is actually a funny story, because it doesn't begin recently. No, this story begins three years ago. It begins in 2010. Why does it begin in 2010?

Because that was the first time that I ever had to be responsible for lawn maintenance. So we've been in this house for about three years now and we're about to sign a lease for another year, but before we lived here we lived in another house for a year.

We moved from that house to this house, because this house had more space. There were a variety of reasons, really. Okay, so anyhow, that house had a good sized back yard and front yard and I was responsible for taking care of the grass.

The original plan was that I would take care of it myself. Now mind you, my twin daughters were only a couple of months old. Pfft...wishful thinking, right? Lol, yeah. I think so. It was a nice thought. However, the reality of the situation was that come April...the grass began to grow. It grew, and it grew, and it grew.

I was amazed at just how fast it grew! During the time that the grass was busy growing I was busy trying to figure out which lawn mower to get. I shopped around and decided to go with a gas powered mower. So...I can't remember if I bought it locally or online. I think I bought it from walmart.com but returned it locally.

Yes...returned it. It gets better... So I get my mower and now I needed gas. I can remember that at that time it was a particularly hot spring. Hot as in 90's. Around the time that I needed gasoline for the mower it was in the upper 90's. We had an enclosed metal back porch and the heat from the sun would make the back porch amazingly hot.

There's a reason I share that point, which I'll get to later. So I had someone pick me up some gas. Mind you...I don't know why, but I've become extremely paranoid as I get older of handling anything toxic or flammable, so I was not feeling comfortable with handling gas. Mental issues? Maybe, lol. I didn't want to handle the stuff, but I was sure gonna try! So I get the gas...and it sits. It sits, and it sits, and it sits.

I start freaking out because it's really hot outside and I have nowhere to store it. And they have all these warnings on the gas can to store properly as to avoid explosion...and all that good stuff. The best place to store it was on my back porch, but it was so hot out there that I imagined my house exploding if I stored it there. Really, I did.

That's when I said...to hell with this. I'm getting rid of this gasoline and lawn mower NOW. I'll just pay someone to cut my grass. I'm not going through this. Plus I had twin babies that I was breastfeeding. I can do almost everything, but I'm not that much of a superhero. So I went across the street to my neighbors and asked if they'd like to take my gas can full of gasoline. I figured the husband could put it to use.

They had the perfect storage shed and the husband handled gas for his own stuff. So the wife says sure...then I find out later that he stored it in the back of his car for a while. I then worried that he was going to blow his own car up. Yes...I worry about everything, even people I barely know, lol. But it was gone from my house, so I could breathe a sigh of relief. This all occurred in one afternoon by the way.

I then returned the lawn mower and we found someone to cut my grass; an uncle of mine for a very small fee. He had a riding mower and weed whacker. Once he got started our lawn looked great the rest of the time we were at the house! Then when we moved here he cut the grass here for the rest of the summer of 2010. But before he could cut the grass for the first time at that last house with his riding mower...another uncle helped me out.

This is actually something we all laugh about till this day. The grass was half as tall as he was and he cut it with a pair of shorts on and a push mower. Yes, he did. He's a nice Christian man who happens to be a painter for a living, so that was definitely a very Christian thing to do! And thankfully, he didn't get a tick! I worried that he'd get a tick...I worry too much.

So summer of 2010 my uncle cut the grass here. Then in 2011, I paid someone. In 2012, I had a tough time financially, but was able to pay someone once. Yes...once. Bad, right? What did I do the rest of the time? I had "pity cuts." Yes, "pity cuts." What is a pity cut you say? Well, someone around here seemed to feel sorry for me and sent someone over to cut my grass three times. Yes...three times.

The first time it was so high that the guy cut it with a weed whacker. I kid you not... The second time he used a push mower - movin' on up. The third time he used a riding mower. I still have no clue who sent this guy, but it was definitely a blessing! Last summer I bought myself a mower and weed whacker, along with an outdoor extension cord. But it wasn't gas powered or electric.

It was just a push reel mower, which cuts like a dream by the way. Something that I don't have to worry about handling gasoline with and something I don't have to worry about accidentally running over a cord with, etc. I did have to worry about the very sharp blades when I put it together, though...but I'll get to that later...

So this mower and weed wacker sat in my house until this year, because it was just too hard with my daughters to get out there and do the yard work. Now that they're getting older it's getting easier to do things like that. So I couldn't wait to do it this year! We're in the process of transforming the outside of the house now and I want to keep the yard trimmed, along with adding flowers to all three of my porches and a few places in the ground outside of my house.

I'm no expert gardener, but I'm about to learn and I'm having fun already. I tagged this to my Blessings in Disguise tab too, because it was a blessing that someone cut my grass three times last year. And most recently my 16-year-old son did some yard work for someone here in town and the guy gave him a bunch of rose trees/bushes to plant.  He didn't want them and told my son to do whatever he wanted with them, so being the entrepreneur that he already is...he sold them, lol.

And he made some pretty decent money that day too if I might add, lol. He saved me one and it was weird that he had them to begin with, because I've been thinking a lot about how I wanted to plant a rose bush in front of my house. I even had the perfect spot picked out. So that rose bush was also a blessing, because God knew I wanted a rose bush.

Yesterday a funny thing happened too. This will show you just how far my lawn has come. It hasn't seen days like this since our first summer, because even though it was cut last year it wasn't a good job. There was grass everywhere from not being raked and over grown weeds, etc.

So, anyhow...my yard and the outside of my house went from looking like a place for people to throw their garbage (which they did) and for people to stop with their dogs to go to the bathroom (which they also did) to yesterday, two people stopped in front of my house near a small tree in the front of my yard. The tree just started to bloom and looked pretty. I think it was a mother, grandmother and grandchild.

There was a young woman holding a baby in one of those infant carriers that attaches to the front of your body and then an older woman. I saw them...and I was like what in the hell? I started to look for a dog. It was my first thought. No dog...then the young woman with the baby poses in front of the tree while the older lady takes a photo! I almost caught a tear in my eye and was filled with utter pride. It totally made my day! Ha, ha, ha!!

It was also funny that a few of my neighbors were watching us work on the yard and the one guy offered my son the use of his gas powered mower, which was nice. So he took him up on it, only because the grass was starting to get high already.

So we used both mowers. I think the place of business across the street, along with my neighbors were all thinking, "well, it's about damn time." Ha, ha, ha! That's all I kept thinking while we were out there.

I have to say that after using the weed whacker, that is something you definitely have to be careful with, because I almost nicked my work boots a couple of times. I was getting so into weed whacking that I got close a couple of times. Those weed whackers are interesting too, because when I put it together the directions had no words...just pictures. Oh, yes, one of those instruction manuals. And I was like, am I doing this right?

How come I don't see the blades? Where's the blades? But that's a safety measure. The blades come out when you turn that baby on. Putting the mower together was a breeze too, but I needed two pliers and my son held one set of pliers while I tightened everything with the other set. Then came time to attach the handles to the blades.

Even my 13-year-old thought those blades were scary, but I was careful and didn't get cut. I was so proud to not only put these tools together, but to have cut the grass the way I wanted. It was so bad at first that I had to cut, then rake; cut then rake; cut then rake, and then I had to bag it all. But it was so worth it!

Then when we were done we were so proud of ourselves that we both couldn't stop looking out the window at the yard the rest of the night and saying to each other, "wow, we really did a good job." Lol.  Now we'll be keeping up with it every two weeks or less. It felt so good to get 'er done and now I can say I know how to cut grass . . .

I found this last night on YouTube and it's just so beautiful...so I had to share it.  I love the photos of the lion in the beginning, because of the story behind it. Sad, yet a story of unconditional love.

Happy Valentine's Day!!

I've Decided ...

I've decided that I'm going to go back to adding pictures every day, but there won't be a funny pic of the day or a daily inspiration. It will be one or the other, but not both. I really love things like that, so I'm gonna start doing it again.

Happy Groundhog Day!

Yay! This little dude didn't see any shadows today, which means the prediction of an early spring!  My 6 year old couldn't wait to find out this morning because they've been talking about it in school a lot.  Let's just hope he's right!!  I sure hope so!  Yay!!
