Carmen's Mommy Tips: How To Prevent A Tantrum - For Any Age

Prevent A Tantrum with These Tips

Been There - Done That

photo credit: theloushe via photopin cc
This is for those situations when your toddler has something that you need to take away from them and you'd like to prevent a tantrum, or maybe two toddlers that are fighting over one toy, or maybe even a child of any age that can't have their own way.

The Toddler Tantrum

Lets start with the toddlers. One way to prevent a tantrum is to make sure you have thoroughly child proofed your home. Not only for hazard reasons, but if there is something that is special to you that you don't want your little one to mangle, destroy and then scream bloody murder when you take it away from them.

Yeah, that's always fun!! :D The best way to avoid all of that nonsense is to make sure EVERYTHING is out of reach that means anything to you, that is of value, or that they just can't have. Things like nick nacks, special pictures, electronics, cell phones, real books (the kind that rip, unlike baby books - yeah, those), if you work from home - important paper work that you might have mistakenly left on a desk or table.

We want to remove anything that they might want to play with that they can't have. Again, so we don't have to take it away from them and have them screaming bloody murder and having your neighbors thinking you are abusing your child because they are screaming so loud, lol. Talk about embarrassing and mortifying!!

In the event that you have to take something away from a toddler that they can't have, remove it quickly and calmly. Do it so fast that it's almost like they never had it and act like it's an exciting fun thing. Say, thank you, as you make it exciting and fun, like they're doing a good thing. Then hide it quickly and divert their attention extremely fast to something else. Of course, tickling helps, too. :)

Two Toddlers and One Toy

When you have two toddlers fighting over one toy, first you want to figure out who had it first. Give it to the child that had it first and then find something similar for the other toddler to play with, that way they feel like they are playing with the same toy.

You could also give them something different that's just as fun. Also, try to encourage sharing when they are not fighting over one toy, because that can help avoid a fight to begin with. With one and two year old's, though, this situation is usually inevitable.

The Grocery Store Tantrum

For grocery store tantrums, those can be avoided by promising the child that if they are a good boy or girl, they get a treat. Maybe 99 cent gold fish at the register, or a 50 cent candy bar. Cookies; whatever you feel would be a reward. It could even be a 99 cent toy. I don't think this is bribing; more like encouraging good behavior and treating a child for sitting nicely.

If a tantrum ensues, then there are situations where you warn that you will leave the store if they don't stop. If they don't stop, tell them they will not be allowed to come with you again if they can't behave. If they still don't listen, then leave the store. They need to know that it's not acceptable to behave like that in a store.

I had this happen with my older two boys a few times when they were younger, but not with my younger kids. I was actually complimented once by another customer at the deli who said I should write a book on how to get kids to behave in the store!!

With Older Kids

When an older child is ready to have a tantrum, even a teenager, just send them to their room. With younger kids, say 6 years of age, time it. I start with 10 minutes, then if he repeats the behavior, back in his room he goes.

With older kids, I tell them to stay in their room until they can talk to me the way that they should be. Try to avoid yelling at any age because it only makes the situation worse. Sometimes, though, with older kids we have to raise our voice to be heard and asserted. But really, though, kids pay more attention when you talk to them.

And talk to them regularly. There is a fine line between being a friend and parent to our teens. We want to be both and not one or the other. When you have both, you avoid the situations where you need to send them to their rooms in the first place. :D

Carmen's Random Tips: How To Get Crayon Off Your Walls

This is going to be short and sweet. The easiest way to get crayon off your walls is to use the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!! It also works great on pen and pencil marks; even scuff marks.

So if you haven't been lucky enough to discover this yet, go out and get one today. They also work great on toys or furniture that your little artist may have drawn on!!!

Another idea is to try using a simple pencil eraser to remove crayon from your walls. I've tried that before too. It's a bit more time consuming than Mr. Clean but it does work. I "think" it works on pen too. I would utilize that option for small marks and stick with Mr. Clean for big jobs!

Tips for the Home: How To Clean An Oven - Cleaning Tips

Cleaning Tips

How to Clean an Oven

photo credit: Jennuine Captures via photopin cc
You have two options here when learning how to clean an oven as far as I'm concerned; in my own personal experience anyway.

I used to help my mother clean a lot growing up, did a lot of housekeeping as a teenager, and as an adult I worked as a self-employed house keeper at one point (made pretty darn good money too!).

When I was self-employed, I was cleaning vacant apartments and condos for a realty company to get them ready for new tenants and I cleaned a lot of ovens.

Method Number One

When I cleaned vacant apartments and had to clean an oven I would put on a mask and spray the oven with a fume free oven cleaner spray. I would then let is sit for as long as it needed to sit while I went on to clean other things. Even though the spray I used was fume-free I still wore a mask. When it was ready to be wiped down I would wipe it down with a rag. I prefer to not use scrubby sponges with ovens because little pieces of the sponge break off into your oven and you don't want that.

That can also happen with some rags, so be careful about the material that you are cleaning your oven with. I'm also paranoid about anything that can cause fire (again - OCD), so avoid anything flammable falling into your oven. Use a rag that is strong and won't break apart. You can always test it out.

Now that you're ready to wipe it down grab your rag and a bucket. Fill the bucket with warm to hot water, preferably hot since you're going to be wearing cleaning gloves anyway. The hotter the better. Dip the rag into the water bucket and begin wiping down the oven, starting with the door that way you don't get oven cleaner on yourself! :D

Once the door is all clean, then start working on the inside. To clean the racks you should really take them out and clean them in either your kitchen sink or bath tub. The bath tub would give you more space but it can be done at the kitchen sink too. You will probably have to rinse out your bucket a few times before you're finished as the water will become dirty.

Method Number Two

Your second option and less toxic option in cleaning your oven is to use S.O.S. pads with a bucket of hot water and a rag to rinse. A little more time consuming but less toxic.

And there you have it. That's how to clean an oven. When you're finished your oven should be sparkling like new!!

Tips for the Home: How To Get A Sparkly Clean Bath Tub

How to Clean a Bath Tub

The Easiest Way to Clean a Bath Tub

photo credit: ooh_food via photopin cc
The easiest way to clean the tub itself and even shower walls if you have them is to clean them with a scrubby sponge and some Soft Scrub. I say "if you have them," because some people only have a bathtub and vice versa.

I've been using Soft Scrub on my tubs and shower walls ever since I was old enough to clean a tub or shower wall. Soft Scrub doesn't just clean, it deep cleans and removes film without really needing much elbow grease.

If your tub or shower walls have soap scum on them wet a scrubby sponge with warm to hot water, apply a little soft scrub on the scrubby side of your sponge, then just clean the tub or shower wall. Of course make sure you're wearing gloves as to not burn your hands and to not get chemicals on your hands from the product itself.

You really only need to swipe it; there's not much scrubbing effort needed. If you have mold or mildew anywhere, like if you have it in your tile shower walls, or in the molding of your shower walls, then you can use a good mold and mildew bleach spray again with a scrubby sponge after letting that sit for a few minutes. This is good for crevices if your shower has those.

When you're finished cleaning rinse with warm water. I use a cup to rinse. Be careful to not splatter anything in your face when rinsing; I'm pretty anal about this, lol.  (OCD)

Final Thoughts

Just always make sure to wear cleaning gloves when handling any type of bleach product and make sure the room is well ventilated. You should also always wear a mask. I never wore a mask when handling bleach sprays until about two years ago. It's really not good to breathe in the fumes.

When I clean my bathroom with bleach products I always leave a window open for ventilation. Not so much for the Soft Scrub as with a bleach spray. If you don't have a window, then leave the door open and open a window nearest to the bathroom. Spray some air freshener too while you're at it.

Give the room a good hour or so to air out when you're finished. And voila - you have a sparkly white tub and shower walls! Because, hey, we can't all afford to pay a housekeeper. ;)

The Perfect Princess Toddler Bed - Disney Princess Toddler Bed with Canopy

The Disney Princess Toddler Bed

An Affordable and Beautiful Princess Toddler Bed

photo credit: erika.tricroche via photopin cc

Well I wanted to try to keep my girls in their cribs until they were as close to the age of three as possible, because it's just easier to get them to stay in their beds after you tuck them in by the time they're three.

But that didn't quite happen as planned... One of my daughters decided that she thoroughly enjoyed climbing out of her crib and giving me new little grey hairs on my head!  So it was time to move on from the crib and quickly

I instantly fell in love with the Disney Princess Canopy Toddler Bed, because it was the perfect princess toddler bed for my little princesses!! As a little girl I always wanted a canopy bed but my mother couldn't afford it, so I just had to make sure my girls had one! And they did...for a little while...until they decided to start trying to pull down the canopy and swing from the bars.

Yes, they did. I removed the canopy part but left the poles up for when they were ready to try the canopy again until one night when I was getting them ready for bed... I was dressing one of my twin daughters when my other daughter gets my attention by calling, "Ma."

I looked over at her and she was hanging onto one of the bars like a monkey smiling at me and giggling. Needless to say the poles were immediately removed from the room. Maybe they'll be ready to have the canopies back when they're closer to the age of three. For now, though, the beds look pretty as they are.

Maybe two years of age is too young for a canopy or maybe it would be different if I had one toddler and not two. Who knows... Just be warned though that the canopies could be pulled down if you have a monkey child. Do I regret my purchase? No way, because we can always try again. With or without the canopy the beds are girly and beautiful. I love them.

This is Where I Found Mine

I ordered mine from Walmart. They were affordable and shipping was fast as usual. Again, I got lucky and found mine when they were on a roll back for $57 each. Now they're about $64, which is still affordable for such a cute girly princess toddler bed!! Ironically I was missing a piece to one of the canopies. The company of the toddler beds shipped me the missing piece right away free of charge of course and they were very helpful.

Final Thoughts

I should add the most important thing of all is that my baby girls LOVED their beds and were so excited watching me put them together!! Since I had two beds to put together by the time I got to the second one I was a pro. I had to redo the first one a few times, which was my fault for not following instructions carefully. But like I said by the time I got to bed number two I was a pro.  :D

Carmen's Random Tips: My Favorite Soap For My Kids - Good 'Ol Oatmeal Soap

Oatmeal Soap is Awesome

photo credit: echoesofstars via photopin cc
I just feel like sharing my favorite soap to use for my children. My favorite soap and the main soap that we use right now for bathing is just plain old oatmeal soap. I'm a health nut to an extent and I love to use this for my own skin too.

I'm not an extreme health nut, but like to be healthy as much as I can. I'm a work in progress. It smells good, it's natural and leaves your skin so soft and smooth. Oatmeal soap is also great for washing your face. It's gentle, healing and it smells good. Plus, it's only about a buck.

If you've ever read my acne tips, then you know I also use the black african soap. I only use that for my face and back though. I love to use the oatmeal soap for bathing the rest of myself as well but I started using it on my face when I was about 19 and that's all I've used since. Started using it for the body about ten years after that and now that's all I buy.

I use the Yardley brand and they have other fun soap bars like coconut, shea butter, rose, lavender, etc. I buy them all but the oatmeal is my fav. I ran out of my daughter's Johnson's baby bath one day and said to heck with it, they're old enough to start using regular soap. But something gentle, of course. I love using oatmeal soap on them; it's really gentle and smells so good.

My Baby Gate Dilemma - The Best Baby Gates

My Baby Gate Dilemma

photo credit: Brian Sawyer via photopin cc
My daughters are 2 1/2 now, but I still use baby gates. I keep one in between the kitchen and dining room to keep them out of the kitchen, and I keep one in between the living room and the hallway that leads to the upstairs.

There are many reasons for this... First of all, the kitchen has many hazards and even though I've child proofed as best I can, it's just easier to keep them out.

There's two of them and one of me. So we'll keep it like this a little longer... The entrance to the hallway stairs is another obvious given. I don't want them going upstairs by themselves.  Because ; A, they can fall; B, the litter box is upstairs - God forbid they touch that; and C, I just don't want them up there - again two of them and one of me. Best to maintain full control at all times...

If I'm busy doing something downstairs, I don't want to have to worry about the Rugrats sneaking upstairs. The dilemma? I rent a house that is sort of crooked. The foundation is off, so the house is crooked. Is this dangerous? I don't think so. My landlord assured me when I moved in two years ago that he spent thousands to keep the foundation safe. It's just crooked...

Flooring and doorways are uneven, etc., you get the idea. What does this have to do with baby gates, you ask? Well, since the doorways are uneven and crooked, the gates are easy for anyone to take down, including a two year old! Yes, I'm constantly fixing the baby gates and would like to invest in a gate that secures to the wall with screws.

With all of my boys, we used the wooden baby gates and they worked just fine, because we had normal doorways. They were cheap and did the job - kept baby safe. This time around, when I went to purchase my baby gates, the store that I went to was out of the wooden gates. So I bought the plastic baby gates, which were ten dollars more.

Since I didn't feel like hunting all over for the wooden gates, I just bought two of the plastic gates and I really hate them. Hate is a strong word, but I hate these gates. Maybe if my doorways weren't crooked, I wouldn't hate them so much... They have mixed reviews online, so it must be the doorways. It's just easier to get a tighter suction with the wooden gates.

So I went out and bought the wooden gates when I realized that the plastic gates were useless in my home. I even doubled up at one point, using both the wooden and plastic in the doorways, and would you believe my crafty daughters still managed to take the gates down!! Not only that, but the wooden gates eventually broke from being taken down so many times. Useless....

Only useless because of the doorways though. Because I obviously keep a watchful eye on them at all times, I know when they take a gate down or one of their brothers takes notice and we fix it right away. It's more of a huge nuisance than anything at this point. I can't wait to come up with the money for the secure baby gates, because, really, in my opinion they are the best baby gates. I can't afford them yet, but they will definitely be going on my wish list. This is my dream baby gate...

Twinkle Little Star

My 2 year old daughters LOVE this video and so does their Mama!!  And so will YOU and your little ones!  If you have tiny tots, you have to show them this adorable video.  It has to be the cutest and best Twinkle Little Star video I've ever seen.

I sing this song to my daughters so much that my one daughter tries to sing it by herself, which was why I went looking for a video.  I added this to my playlist on youtube.  I'll be sharing them here too.  Super Simple Songs has a few videos that I love and added.

Recipes Are On Hold and Starting a Wish List :)

Due to the brokenness of my 4-year-old Kodak digital camera, along with the fact that I haven't owned a cell phone since December, this means I can't take pictures of my recipes. Which also means they're on hold now until I can afford to get a new camera or decide to go ahead and get a cheap cell phone.

I kind of need a new cell phone soon anyway, so maybe sometime in September. This bums me out though, because I really enjoyed sharing some of my favorite recipes. Also, I wanted to share that I decided to start a wish list for myself tonight. It's pretty self explanatory. :)

It will be full of things I'd like to acquire in the future through hard work. Goals of mine and treats for myself. I never treat myself, so I look forward to the day when I can. You would be amazed at the things that you will find in my wish list, lol. The first two that I plan on writing about are actually pretty funny and pathetic...🙃

Carmen's Random Tips: An Affordable AC Option - Cheap AC

photo credit: NathanaelB via photopin cc
Okay. So last year at the end of the summer two of my air conditioners kicked the bucket. At the time, we had three. We used two downstairs for the main areas of the house and one upstairs with a bunch of fans.

One was a 10,000 BTU and one was a 5,000 BTU. Since money is really tight right now, I thought we could try to make it through the summer with just fans. That is just a big fat - LOL.

My plan might have worked out had it not been the hottest summer on record. Funny thing is I knew it was going to be a hot summer, because I obsessively follow all of the weather changes. Obsessively...

I think all the people I grew up with were getting a little sick of me constantly posting things from the weather channel on Facebook, lol. So here I was warning everyone I know for months ahead of time to get ready for the hottest summer that was coming, yet I thought I could kid myself into believing I could make it through with just fans.

By the end of July, I couldn't take anymore. I sucked it up for two months like a champ, so we earned our air conditioners! We NEEDED air. But in order to do this, I had to take bill money. I had no choice; I had to do it. We were really suffering and so was my sanity. I was sweating from morning till night and as an aunt of mine used to say, it was "hotter than a blue b*tch in hell." Whatever that means, lol. But I always found it funny!

I didn't have much money to work with, so I had to find something that would give me the most bang for my buck. So I checked out Walmart and Amazon to begin my search for the best cheapest air conditioner. I found a General Electric with 5,000 BTU's on a rollback for $98! I carefully read just about every review before making the decision to go ahead and order three.

I could only afford three, but I had a plan. I had the portable AC in the living room downstairs. I was going to put one in the kitchen, that way the downstairs would be cool. Then I was going to put the other two upstairs somewhere in the middle, that way the entire upstairs would be cool.

Now, just so you can get a visual on just how awesome these little AC's are because they did the job, my house is a fairly large four bedroom home. Downstairs we have the kitchen, dining room, one small bedroom and the living room. I put one AC in the kitchen, the dining room is in between the living room and kitchen, then we have the small bedroom off of the dining room.

Remember we already had the portable 5,000 BTU AC in the living room. From the living room, you enter the hallway, which leads to the upstairs. There was massive heat coming from the upstairs, so the little portable AC was really struggling to keep the living room cool before I bought the new AC's.

Upstairs there are three bedrooms; two that are large, the bathroom and the hallway. The hallway has an area that is large enough where we used to have a desk there and that's also where we keep the kitty box.  :D The entire house is cool and comfortable now!! So cool, in fact, that I keep it on low because it gets COLD. I don't like cold; I like comfortable.

Reminds me of how my mother told me about how an aunt of mine when she went through menopause would blast the AC in the winter, and her husband, my uncle, would have to wear a winter coat in the house. But back to my new AC's...so I strategically placed these AC's throughout my house to keep my house cool and my plan worked

Upstairs, the hallway and bathroom separate the bedrooms, so I put one in the window in the hallway, then one in the window of the bathroom. We keep the doors open during the day to keep the air circulating, then at night my oldest boys sometimes close their doors and their rooms remain comfortable!

I am a petite five foot three woman and I managed to install these AC's by myself with no help. They are very light-weight and if you follow the directions carefully, it's a piece of cake. However, if you're not experienced and are afraid, then ask someone to help you who knows how to install an AC.

I will add that they are no longer on a rollback. They're now $119, which is still cheap considering how powerful these little AC's are for such a low price. I also paid for a one year warranty. My one year replacement warranty was only $6, but hopefully I won't have to use it.

Shipping was pretty fast, too. It usually is when I order from Walmart, depending on what part of the country my item is being shipped from. I ordered my air conditioners on Wednesday, August 5th and they arrived on Saturday, August 8th. It was a hot day, too, when they showed up at my door, so I was like a little kid at Christmas when I saw them sitting there!! :D

PS.  We still use a couple of fans upstairs to keep the air circulating.  :)

I Love this and it's so very true.

So Excited!

I'm so excited today because I got approved to be a Walmart.com affiliate! This makes me very happy, because I've ordered so much from them online. There's so many things that I can review. In fact, there was something I bought a month ago that I can't wait to review! I made a list, front and back of all the things I have ordered from them online. Yes, front and back, lol. Can't wait to start sharing!

Peanut Butter Jelly Time!!!

Lol - I thought of this today at lunch time.
Video by:   Albino Blacksheep

A New Day, A New Beginning

Every day is an opportunity to start over. Yesterday was a day straight out of hell, but today I can start over. The sun is shining and I woke up to having the ability to walk on my foot! I guess it's not sprained after all!!

Thank God, because since I have no car right now, I can not be without the ability to walk too. By the time I went to bed last night, I was really afraid I wouldn't even be able to get down to my basement to do laundry.

It hurt that bad if I put pressure on it, which is why I was hopping and avoided putting pressure on it. I prayed a lot last night and I feel like God plucked me out of the depths of despair. Thank you father for hearing my prayers. I've really been wanting to give up lately, but he won't let me. He tests me, but doesn't allow me to give up.

Our tests in life are testing our strength and ability to persevere in spite of hard times and adversity. They are also a test of our faith. I never give up, so I guess that means I'm a strong person. Sometimes I'd like to give up, but I don't and I never will. I am a rock for myself and for my children...

The Black Cloud...

photo credit: jonny2love via photopin cc
There was a black cloud upon me today... It started with me spraining my right foot coming down the stairs with a bowl of popcorn that someone left at the top of the stairs on the railing for the cats to spill.

I had my almost finished cup of coffee in my other hand when I tripped on toys at the bottom of the stairs.

This was also after spending two hours on the phone with my cable company, because my 16-year-old messed up the wires to the modem and router, which caused our internet to go out.

At one point the phone was out too, because it's digital and everything is connected. Missed the 3:30 p.m. bus to the store after being on the telephone with the cable company for two hours. Then someone screamed at me walking to the bus stop for the 4:30 p.m. bus.

Yes, screamed for no apparent reason...and screamed loud to get a reaction out of me. They got a reaction out of me alright... I flipped them off and then kept walking on my way. I found the fact that they screamed to be ruder than me flipping them off. Then I'm sitting at the bus stop by two nice quiet people when some young woman walks by us pushing a bike up the hill and a brand new Honda drives by.

A little kid who looked to be about ten or 11 years of age yells out the window "get a car." The woman pushing the bike said something to the boy and so did I. I said, "nice manners." The woman pushing the bike looked over at me. We both smiled and I said, "kids."

The bus was late. I get to Walmart and see the darkest clouds that I've seen in a long time. Looked like a potential wall cloud, lol. This is New York - not the mid-west. I do my shopping, get to the register and realize that I grabbed heavy whipping cream instead of creamer, which = no, we can't have that, so I had to stop my order.

I was at the self checkout and I had only scanned two other things, so it was okay. Cancelled the order, went back for creamer and find a line. Finally check out and realize I didn't have enough bags with me to take on the bus, but made the best of things with the bags I had. I stuffed things, but carefully. Call the bus company from a store phone, because the pay phone doesn't work and I no longer own a cell phone.

I have to call the bus company if I need a bus back from Walmart, because they no longer come to Walmart automatically like they used to, unless you request it. They say the bus will be there at 6 p.m. I fear getting left behind, because it's not automatic and one time the bus driver did forget me. Luckily that time I saw her drive by and called right away. She had to come back for me...

No more bus's till 8 p.m. after the 6 p.m. bus, and that's frightening when you have to get home to kids and to cook dinner. Get to the doors of Walmart when I can see that it's pouring the biggest down pour I've seen in a long time. Luckily it slows down when I'm about to go outside. I go into my wallet to get my bus money and noticed right away that the bank card I just used was missing.

Run back to the register fearing that I will miss my bus and my card is not at the register. Horrific thoughts of someone finding my card flash through my mind, but I have no time to run to customer service. I figure I'll just cancel the card when I get home. Wait for bus; bus comes, but wrong bus. I mentioned to the bus driver that I was waiting for the bus and which bus I'm waiting for and she says that bus is on it's way.

Ten minutes go by - no bus. I fear the worst. Then I see a bus go by; I assumed it was my bus and ran back into Walmart to call the bus company, because she would of had to come back. Turns out that wasn't my bus either and now I'm afraid that I'm gonna really miss her. Run back out just in time to see the bus pulling in to the parking lot. Get on bus with more bags than planned.

Bags are heavy, bus is full of people and stinks like the worst body odor I've smelled in my life. And honestly any time I've smelled bad body odor has been, dun, dun, dun, on a bus. I thought I was going to vomit the whole way home. When I take my groceries out of the cart the cart rolls in front of bus.

Walk to get cart to put back on sidewalk and step in big puddle, which saturates my shoes and my capris. I "carry on" mad as hell, though. Quadruple checked my wallet on the bus for my card and finally FOUND it! Apparently, I was so stressed that I put it in the wrong place! Ugh, my brain.

Get back to town and pain in ankle is beginning to set in. Almost home when the bus lady tells me that she has to let me out "here" as in - in town. She usually lets me out closer to my home. It turns out that she was going on her break. I had to walk through town down a big steep hill and up another steep hill with five bags, three of which were very heavy.

Damn near cried at one point and asked God why he hated me so much because it really feels like it lately. I had told the bus driver if I had known she was going on her break I would of gotten off closer to my house on a different street. She knows this because that's where I used to get off before I realized she could get me closer. I get home and ankle is in excruciating pain at this point. I'm hopping around now but all is well with the world because I'm home.

Bad Week...
