Well I've had this homemade play dough recipe for about nine years now and can remember making it with my older three boys when they were little.

It was so much fun and you can make any color you like with food coloring. We basically did all of the colors in the rainbow.

I had originally found this homemade play dough recipe on Nick Junior and printed it out. I couldn't find it on their site about a year ago or so, but it's back now.

I still have my old print out though, too. So if you'd like to learn how to make homemade play dough, have fun! I hope you enjoy this homemade play dough recipe and have as much fun making it as I did!! Homemade play dough always takes me back to my own childhood. Just the smell of it...just something about it. Good memories...

Nick Jr.'s Homemade Play Dough Recipe

Ingredients:

1 cup of flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup of water
1 tsp. food coloring
2 tsp. oil

Homemade Play Dough Directions:

Step 1:  Measure out the first three ingredients and stir together in a medium sized saucepan.

Step 2:  Over medium heat, gradually stir in 1 cup of water, 1 tsp. of food coloring and 2 tsp. of oil.

Step 3:  Cook over medium heat, stirring continuously.  Cook until the mixture forms a gooey, sticky ball.  Keep stirring or else the mixture will burn on the bottom if you're not careful.

Step 4:  Remove the pan from heat.

Step 5:  Let the dough cool for 15-20 minutes before playing with it.  Keep the dough in an air tight container when not in use.  (I used zip lock baggies too!)

Step 6:  Have fun!!

The Quickest Way to Clean Up After a Toddler - Highchair Tips

Highchair Cleaning 101

How to Clean Up A Toddler's Highchair Fast

My rugrats ❤️

Where do I begin? Well, cleaning up after a toddler in a highchair can at times be a nightmare, so I'm going to pass along some tips to make your life a "little" bit easier and make the cleaning process quicker for you!

This is especially important if you have more than one toddler. Maybe you have twins, or just two kids close in age. First and foremost, remain focused at all times, especially if you have two of them!

Gather Your Supplies

With two against one - focus, focus, focus! Secondly...keep your vacuum cleaner handy at all times during meal time with toddlers. You're going to need it later...You will also need some paper towels, a wash cloth, and maybe even some baby wipes.

Baby wipes make life so much easier during situations like this one. I can't say enough good things about baby wipes! Let's start with this...does your toddler thoroughly enjoy tossing food all over your kitchen? Even when you've told them "no," time and time again? Okay, so if they don't, then you are blessed.  If they do, you're still blessed, but you've got a problem and have to teach them "no." We've all been there.

The only way to do this is to just keep telling them "no," but don't yell or get angry, just be firm and consistent. Tell them it's not nice and all that good stuff. You can even try taking their food away when they throw something, then hand it back to avoid hysterics. I think the taking the food away thing would work better for older toddlers, like, close to three years in age.

My daughters are such angels in other ways. For example, I can take them just about anywhere with me, but they love to throw food at home when they eat. Fun, fun! I obviously try to teach them "no," but it's the age and maybe the fact that it's two against one. None of my boys ever did this. Not one of them.

Thankfully, it's becoming less-and-less that they do this and I think we're almost passed this stage. So in the mean time, I can expect to clean almost every time they eat. And here's how I make clean up as quick as possible, because I don't have an hour to clean them up three times a day. That would be THREE hours of my time and I have too many other things to do.

Now to the Good Part - Cleaning Up

First, I remove any big food chunks from the tray if there is any that is. I usually do this with my bare hands, but if it's really nasty I'll grab a wet paper towel or two. Most times though, I honestly don't care.  Hey, I'm a Mom...  Next, I grab a wet cloth ( I use the baby wash clothes.) and I clean the high chair tray, then the hands and mouth of the child.

This obviously requires rinsing and repeating a few times. Now, mind you, I'm doing this all with speed and precision, because I don't have all day. With my daughters being twins, I clean up one twin at a time, putting space between their highchairs, so the clean child doesn't touch the dirty highchair when she's done. I've had that happen too...

Then, I clean up the other child's tray, face and hands. After that, I start working on the floor or anywhere else they may have thrown food if they did throw food. The qickest and easiest, less nightmarish way to do this is to grab a small plastic bag - let's say, a Walmart bag. Something like that. Then, grab either a wet paper towel, or a baby wipe. You might need a few...

With my bare hands, (unless it's nasty) start picking up the food and putting it into the bag. You know, like, pieces of sandwich, big pieces of food, etc. Nothing little! We can vacuum the little pieces later... Just grab the pieces that will get stuck in your vacuum cleaner!! As you're picking up the food, wipe up those spots with the paper towel, or baby wipe. Have the entire box of wipes with you on hand, because you might need many...

The Vacuum is Your Friend

Then, vacuum. Vacuum the entire eating area. So now that the floor is clean, the tray is wiped down, and the child is clean, then I remove the children one at a time from the room. I will either hold her and brush any crumbs or food off of her and onto the floor, or I stand her up and brush the crumbs or food off.

Again, if there is any food on her. Sometimes I get lucky and there isn't! Now that I've removed the first child from the room, I've obviously added more crumbs to the floor and nine times out of ten, there's more crumbs in the chair where she was sitting.

So, again, I take the vacuum cleaner and vacuum the floor, then the highchair seat pad. I also lift the seat pad up and vacuum under it; crumbs go everywhere sometimes. After doing this, I repeat with the other child.  And it's funny because almost every time I do this, I always think of the movie Mr. Mom with Michael Keaton and the scene where he's vacuuming food in the kitchen, and then I laugh at myself.

Final Thoughts

When you're finished with all of this, and maybe even laughing at yourself, you can take a baby wipe or two and wipe the seat pad down too. Baby wipes work good for regular maintenance if the chair needs wiping down. If it's ready for the washer though, then throw it in at night when the little ones are sleeping that way it's ready to get filthy again in the morning.

So there's your quick and easy highchair tips. I hope I've made your life just a little bit easier!!

Carmen's Favorite Recipes: Homemade Pancake Mix Recipe

Learn How to Make Homemade Pancakes

photo credit: Krug6 via photopin cc
If you want to learn how to make homemade pancakes, then you're going to love this. This is one of the best homemade pancake recipes that I've yet to find.

I made these the other day and just wanted to pass the recipe along, because I think I'm hooked on homemade pancakes now!

So if you want to learn how to make homemade pancakes, then these are not complicated at all to make - it's actually very easy!

The reason that I made them was because I didn't have enough pancake mix to make as many as I wanted to, so I said to myself, let me see if I can find a recipe for homemade. And sure enough, I did. I found this recipe from my favorite recipe site allrecipes.com

I've had my account with them since 2004 and have found so many great recipes over the years. But anyhow, this one has just about has 5 stars. And I also made sure to read through a few of the reviews to look for some extra tips, so I'll share what I learned along the way and what I also came up with myself.

First, here is the direct link to the recipe in case anyone would like to check it out.  I'll also post it below with a tweak and with a little more instruction.

Homemade Complete Pancake Mix

(Makes 8 cups.)

Original Ingredients:

  • 6 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of dry milk powder
  • 1 cup of shortening

Based on reviews, I added these ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup - 1/2 of a cup of sugar
  • 2 teaspoons of baking soda
  • I used milk in place of powdered milk (Only because, I didn't have powdered milk!)
  • And, I added 1 tablespoon of melted butter per cup of mixture that I was making, that way I didn't have to add butter on top. I thought that sounded like a pretty cool idea, so I gave it a try, and loved it.
  • Some people chose to not add the shortening.  I added the shortening.

Homemade Pancakes Directions:

1.)  Mix all of your original ingredients together in addition to the sugar and baking soda if you would like to add them. Then, cut in the shortening.

2.)  Now you can make the entire mix of pancakes if you need to cook for a lot of people, or you can only use what you need and save the rest for another time in a seal tight container. I chose to only use what I needed and then I stored the rest. So I took out 3 cups just like you would with the store bought boxed kind of pancake mix and put those three cups into a bowl. Then, I continued onto the next step.

3.)  Now that you've added the amount of mix that you'd like to use, begin adding your water/milk and/or egg. There was no instructions for this, so try to remember maybe one cup of liquid per cup of mixture. I used 3 cups of pancake mix, with one egg (not everyone used eggs), one cup of milk and almost 2 cups of water.

When I was on my third cup of water, I added it a little at a time just like I do with store bought pancake mix, as to not make them watery and the mix reminded me of Bisquik pancake mix. If you've ever made Bisquick pancakes, then you'll know what I'm talking about.

*An Extra Tip:  I would just like to add that my 12 year old was the first to taste these pancakes and said, "Mmm, it tastes just like a sugar cookie!" Now, while sugar cookies are great, lol, I don't want my pancakes tasting like a sugar cookie.

So next time I'll try 1/4 cup of sugar and go from there. But all-in-all, these pancakes were some of the best I've ever had. And I think this is the way I plan on making pancakes from now on in the future! They are so yummy!!

My Latest Adventures in Parenting...

Carmen's Adventures in Parenting

A Never-Ending Adventure

photo credit: passiveaggressivenotes via photopin cc
So what's cooking in my life right now?? Well I'm doing everything that I can in my power to make money from home to support my children as my son's health problems have forced me to.

I'm working as an independent contractor doing a little bit of everything with the skills that I have and trying to build a home business at the same time.

Then maybe later in the spring I'll be building a different type of home business where I'll be buying products wholesale and reselling them on my beauty site. I couldn't be busier and I couldn't be happier.

The latest "adventure" is to work on this house. I'd like to get a lot of painting done by summer and I'd like to start soon. I've decided to let my older two sons help by doing their own rooms. I'm gonna teach them what I know. My mother's first husband was a professional painter and she always says I paint like him - like a professional, lol.

That's because I know to spackle any spots that need spackling, I know how to sand, to prime, and to tape, etc., before actually painting!! I also know to "cut-in" before rolling. Things like that. :) So I'll be teaching my boys, which I'm actually looking forward to. I also have an adventure coming up that I'm both looking forward to and dreading at the same time.

I'd finally like to learn how to do some gardening and would like to plant some flowers and plants around my house this spring and summer. But before I can do that I have to get rid of a heck of a lot of poison sumac.  Right now it's dead because it's winter, so I'm gonna use this time to "try" my best and remove it for good. I really hope I can, because it's such a nuisance during the summer.

It grows so high and sticks out over the sidewalk like it's trying to reach out and grab someone. You can't just cut it because then it gets in the air, etc. Such a pain in the arse. So I want to get rid of it now while it's cold. Along with that we have this ugly old metal fence in front of our house and a part of it has collapsed.

So I need to remove the broken part and then I might spray paint it white and plant some flowers along it. I'm a renter, so I can't just remove the whole thing. It's ugly but can be worked with, with a good spray paint! We also have a bunch of birthdays coming up. Yes, I have a lot of kids and all their birthdays seem to be back-to-back.

Only one birthday is later and that is my 16-year-old. His birthday is in July, thankfully. So in February my oldest will be 18, a week later my daughters will be three, then a few days after that another boy will be seven, and one month later another boy will be 13, then my 16-year-old will be 17 in July. Of course, we have Easter in between all of these birthdays too, and Mother's Day and Father's Day. Always something when you're a parent, lol.

Oh, and baseball season is coming up. Little league sign ups are in March. Can't wait!!! So much coming up and I'm excited. We're also getting a new car hopefully in February, but possibly March. I'm really hoping for February though. We're getting a 2012 or 2013 Chevy Suburban; my dream car... I'm a SUV kind of girl. I've always loathed  minivans even though I've driven a few.

I just prefer a truck. I can't wait to be done with being without my vehicle. It's so hard relying on public transportation when you have kids. It can be done but it's hard as hell. I've learned many valuable lessons though during this time in my life without my car.

It's certainly humbling. I've been humbled many a times in my life, but I guess God felt like I had some more lessons to learn. And I feel like I've learned so much more and then some... Couldn't be happier right now.  :D

1/13/14 Update:  Truck has yet to come. Actually, I'm hoping to get a Chevy Traverse next month. Didn't get an ounce of painting done, grass was cut, no gardening, and have yet to start selling products for my beauty site, lol. Wishful thoughts...wishful thoughts... Every day life is just busy - in due time.

Carmen's Random Tips: A Quick and Easy Way to Clean Your Refrigerator

A Quick Way to Swipe Down Your Refrigerator if You Don't Have Much Time (And for Regular Maintenance)

photo credit: JenWaller via photopin cc
Okay, so I haven't written in a couple of weeks and when I've decided to finally make the time it's to post a quick and easy way to clean your refrigerator!! The reason being...I had to wipe mine down two days ago and just wanted to share my brilliant idea, which made it go quicker!

And by the way, I say "had to" because I HATE tasks like this. But my new trick made it a breeze and it only took me 15 minutes tops. I also didn't clean out any bins though, so I'm sure if I added that then it would take a little bit longer.

This would be the kind of cleaning that would be good for regular "maintenance." A deep clean could still work with this idea, but to do a deep clean that includes bins. It's quickest to soak them in really hot water and some dish soap. Okay, so just for regular wiping down...grab...again...BABY WIPES!

I use these things for everything. Not for disinfecting, but to wipe something sticky, crumbs and things like that. Makes cleaning a breeze. So I grabbed the baby wipes and was amazed at how clean my refrigerator came. For a deep clean I think I would wipe with the baby wipes first, then disinfect. But, wow. Baby wipes...who would of thought? I love these friggin things... And, remember, Huggies baby wipes work best to wipe things down with.

Juggling a Lot Right Now

I'm juggling a lot right now and haven't had time to post. I'm now juggling work, plus a home business that I'm trying to build. Hopefully I'll have time to post some "thoughts" soon. I'm also considering adding school into the mix this fall. LOL, we'll have to see about that one. I might wait until my daughters are a little older. If I do though, I'm leaning towards Criminal Justice. Yeah, baby, that has been my passion since about 2008. I want to work with troubled youths or helping people through advocacy in some way. That's a dream of mine...
