A Quick Tip to Keep Your Kitchen Sponge Clean and Bacteria Free

Tired of throwing out stinky kitchen sponges? They do in fact sell sponges that seem to last longer and resist bacteria, but there is a way to slightly extend the shelf life of your kitchen sponge that's very easy.

Kitchen sponges can very quickly become infested with germs and bacteria, but you don't have to throw them away. I mean, unless of course the sponge is raggedy and ready for the garbage, then please do throw it away.

But regardless of how old your kitchen sponge is, you should always try to keep it clean. Especially after washing anything that has to do with raw chicken or hamburger juices.

Two Simple Methods to Clean Your Kitchen Sponge

The next time you think your sponge needs a quick cleaning to get rid of bacteria, try this:

Method 1)  Simply bring a small pan of water to a boil. Once the water begins to boil, you're going to place the sponge in the boiling water for three minutes.

Method 2)  My mother also suggests wetting the sponge, squeezing it out, and then placing it into the microwave for one minute on high heat to kill bacteria.

Final Thoughts

I always do this after I've washed anything in connection with meat or chicken. Think about it - do you want to wash your child's sippy cup with the same sponge that you just cleaned chicken or hamburger blood off of a plate with, or a spatula that you just flipped burgers with??

This is a very simple way to keep your sponge clean and bacteria free, while also slightly extending the life of the sponge. Instead of throwing it out and buying new, before you really have to!
